Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) is established as an autonomous society, of which Minister of Environment and Forests is President. The mandate of the Council is to organize, direct and manage research and education in forestry sector. A 21 member Board of Governors is responsible for direction and control of the affairs of the society. The Director General is the Chief Executive of the Council. He is assisted by four Deputy Director Generals, a Director (Research), a Secretary and small supporting staff. The major objectives of the Council are to undertake, aid, promote and coordinate forestry education, research and its application,to develop and maintain a National Library and information Centre for forestry and allied sciences.
